Launch Conference of the Restoration of Degraded Mires and Peatlands Project in the North-East Region 1 of Romania – PeatRO2

The Bucharest Institute of Biology of the Romanian Academy, as a Beneficiary, launched on Wednesday, June 15, 2022, the project Restoration of degraded swamps and peatlands in the North-East region 1 of Romania – PeatRO2.

This project has a value of 4,346,785 lei and is funded by the Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests, through the Program “Environment, Adaptation to Climate Change and Ecosystems” – RO-Environment with funding through the Financial Mechanism of the European Economic Area (EEA) 2014 -2021. The project is implemented for a period of 27 months, the completion deadline being February 2024.

The general objective of the project is to improve the ecological status of ecosystems, reduce the negative effects of human activities and reduce vulnerability to the impact of climate change by restoring 12 wetlands / peatlands totaling an area of 720.76 ha in the North-East 1 region of Romania ( Suceava, Brașov and Sibiu counties).

During the Launch Conference the activities of restoration of selected peatlands were presented, and also how to monitor the effectiveness of these interventions, as well as  several other topics that were addressed.

The importance of ex-situ conservation of plant species specific to peatland habitats, ecological education on peatlands and the connection with climate change, the need for green training activities for the economic development of local communities, and the promotion of swamps and peatlands were also discussed, as well as the promotion of restored swamps and peatlands for ecotourism.

The event was attended by Acad. Dumitru Murariu, director of the Bucharest Institute of Biology, Mrs. Marisanda Pîrîianu, Programme Manager, Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests, together with members of the implementation team of the project Promoter, representatives of the Directorate for Accessing External Funds within the Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests and guests.
