The Bucharest Institute of Biology of the Romanian Academy, as a beneficiary, launched on Tuesday, May 31, 2022, the project Restoration of degraded swamps and peatlands in the North-East region 2 of Romania – PeatRO3.
This project has a value of 2,495,481 lei and is funded by the Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests, through the Programme “Environment, Adaptation to Climate Change and Ecosystems” – RO-Environment, with funding through the Financial Mechanism of the European Economic Area (EEA) 2014-2021. The project runs for a period of 27 months, the completion deadline being February 2024.
The general objective of the project is to improve the ecological status of ecosystems, reduce the negative effects of human activities and reduce vulnerability to the impact of climate change by restoring 7 wetlands/peatlands totaling an area of 81.73 ha in the North-East 2 region of Romania (Suceava and Maramureș counties).
During the Launch Conference, among the topics addressed were the restoration activities proposed in the project, but also ways to monitor the effectiveness of these interventions using specific indicators.
The importance of ex-situ conservation of plant species specific to peatland habitats, the need for ecological education in peatlands and green training activities for the economic development of local communities, as well as the promotion of restored swamps and peatlands for ecotourism were also discussed.
The event was attended by Acad. Dumitru Murariu, director of the Bucharest Institute of Biology, representatives of the Directorate for Accessing External Funds within the Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests, together with the members of the implementation team of the project promoter.
