PRESS RELEASE Regarding the Closing Conference for the Project “Degraded mires and peatlands restoration of North-East 1 region of Romania’’ – PeatRO2

The Bucharest Institute of Biology of the Romanian Academy, as Beneficiary, organized the Closing Conference for the Project “Degraded mires and peatlands restoration of North-East 1 region of Romania’’ – PeatRO2 at Yesterday hotel, in Bucharest, on  April 2, 2024.

This project has a total value of 4.396.241 lei and is implemented by the Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests, as Programme Operator, through the “Environment, Climate Change Adaptation and Ecosystems’’ Programme (RO – Environment), financed by the European Economic Area (EEA) Financial Mechanism 2014-2021. The Project was implemented throughout 29 months, with a completion date in April 2024.

The general objective of the project is to improve the ecological state of ecosystems, to reduce the negative effects of human activities and to reduce vulnerability to the impact of climate change by restoring 12 wetlands/peatlands totaling an area of 720.76 ha in the North-East Region 1 of Romania ( Suceava, Brașov and Sibiu counties).

During the event, among the topics addressed, there were presentations of the implemented activities, the results that were obtained and their impact at various levels.

The importance of ex-situ conservation of some plant species specific to peatland habitats, the need for ecological education in peatlands and green training activities for the economic development of local communities, but also the promotion of restored mires and peatlands for ecotourism were also discussed.

The event was attended by Dr. Silvia-Simona Grosu-Tudor, as scientific secretary, Institute of Biology – Romanian Academy, Silvia Neamțu, representative of the European Funds Management Department in the Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests, Magni Olsen Kyrkjeei and Oddgeir Andersen (online) from the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research, which is a Partner in the project, together with members of the Project Promoter’s implementation team.
