PRESS RELEASE The municipality of Alba Iulia has designed solutions to adapt to climate change, until 2030, through the “CRESC Alba Iulia” Project

Climate change represents one of the biggest threats to the environment, the social and economic framework. In this context, the Municipality of Alba Iulia is designing concrete solutions to adapt to climate change, until 2030.

This initiative was made possible through the Project ’’Increase of the capacity to mitigate and adapt to climate change in the municipality of Alba-Iulia (CRESC)’’ carried out by the Alba Iulia City Hall, together with its Partner Alba Local Energy Agency (ALEA), financed under the “Environment, Climate Change Adaptation and Ecosystems” (RO-Environment) Programme, the programme area ’’Development of mitigation and adaptation plans in municipalities”.

The Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests is the Programme Operator for the   “Environment, Climate Change Adaptation and Ecosystems” Programme – RO-Environment, funded by the European Economic Area (EEA) Financial Mechanism 2014-2021.

The concrete solutions for adapting to climate change for the Municipality of Alba Iulia until 2030 are summarized in the “Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Plan-PAASC”. The programming document is in its finalization stage.

The realization of PAASC is synonymous, in our opinion, with the consolidation of the vision of the municipality of Alba Iulia, in the field of Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation (AASC). The local community was also involved in the creation of the programmatic document (institutions with responsibilities in the field targeted by the project: institutions with attributions in the field, the local economic environment, educational institutions, non-governmental organizations and the general public). Through PAASC, an extensive analysis of the AASC issue is developed in all fields of activity, strategic objectives are drawn, as well as areas of intervention for which priority actions are identified and taken responsability for.

Also through the “CRESC Alba Iulia” Project, the “Specialist study on the identification of areas vulnerable to high flows of rainwater in the municipality of Alba Iulia and the proposal of a set of solutions for the efficient and sustainable management of the collection of rainwater in these areas” was carried out. The location studied was the Micești neighborhood, located on the right bank of the Ampoi river.

“The ’’CRESC Alba Iulia’’ project is complementary to the efforts made by the Municipality of Alba Iulia in the direction of mitigating and adapting to climate change. The municipality is part of the Convention of Mayors, has a PAEDC developed according to the methodology of the Convention of Mayors and reports annually within the Carbon Disclosure Project initiative (CDP-ICLEI Unified Reporting System).

Last but not least, the PAASC will constitute a key document for the Municipality of Alba Iulia in accessing non-reimbursable European funding, until 2030″, stated Gabriel Codru Pleșa, the mayor of the Municipality of Alba Iulia.

The non-refundable amount attracted by Alba Iulia City Hall through the CRESC Alba Iulia project: 607,938.00 lei, 100% non-refundable and the duration of the project: until December 15, 2022.
